Merkurhuset Gothenburg
DESCRIPTION
Merkurhuset, an office building located in the center of Gothenburg, completes the missing piece of the 19th-century waterfront development. It not only meets the functional requirements of a modern office but also sets a new standard for workspace aesthetics.
Merkurhuset fits perfectly within the narrow plot while maintaining architectural balance. The building stands out with its original and distinctive design. It is both raw and refined, combining organic shapes with a simple, unadorned aesthetic, seamlessly integrating into its surroundings. In early 2023 Merkurhuset was announced as the winner of Kasper Salin-priset, the most prestigious reward within Swedish architecture.
CHALLENGES
A tricky part was to fit eight floors within the building permit height. Installations in the ceilings are very compact and the top floor has been cut off in an ingenious way. With no outside shading the glass played a key role in securing daylight and thermal comfort. There were also very high sound reduction demands.
SOLLUTIONS
